Crop production is constantly threatened by increasing difficulties in controlling insect pests, and synthetic pesticides are still relied upon by a vast majority of the farmers for minimizing the losses due to insect pests. Massive application of pesticides to control insect pests has resulted in adverse effects on the beneficial organisms and the environment. It is in this context that the use of biotechnological techniques for insect control has become all the more important. The potential of recombinant technologies to allow a greater modification than is possible with conventional methods has raised some concerns. Therefore, it is important to have a critical look at the comparative assessment of the, "Environmental Safety of Biotech and Conventional IPM Technologies", to make informed decisions in pest management for sustainable crop production. This book will be highly useful to students, researchers, administrators, NGOs, and the industry all over the world.
Dr. HC Sharma's research contributions are in the areas of insect bio-ecology and population dynamics, economic thresholds, natural plant products, host-plant resistance, transgenic and molecular markers for insect resistance, effect of transgenic crops on non-target organisms, mode of action of Bt toxins, movement of Bt toxins in the eco-system, and climate change effects of insects and crops, and integrated pest management. Extensive experience of working in Asia and Africa, and authored two books on application of biotechnology for pest management, and environmental safety of transgenic crops and other IPPM technologies.Member of Governing Board of International Association of Plant Protection Sciences, and President of International Congresses of Entomology.
